平成3年9月、台風19号が宮島を襲い、国宝に指定されている厳島神社本社のほか、能舞台や大鳥居、五重塔などの重要文化財に多大な被害をもたらしました。
予て、厳島神社社務所、重要文化財豊国神社の屋根替えなどの工事を担当してきた当社では、被災直後から復旧作業に取り組み、文化庁や厳島神社、県の皆様の御指導の下、本格的プロジェクトを開始しました。国宝や重要文化財の再建は、歴史的な建築手法に基づき、忠実に工事を進めなくてはならず、工匠の技と現代の施工技術を調和させるという大きなテーマがありました。平成3年11月までに、本社祓殿、東西の回廊、平舞台、高舞台の修復を終え、一般の参拝を可能にしたのに続き、工事は客神社祓殿、左右門客神社本殿、左右楽房、左右内侍橋、長橋、揚水橋、五重塔、大鳥居へと広範に行われ、平成6年3月、能舞台の修復も完了し、もとの姿を取り戻しました。
今、1400年という長い歴史を持つ厳島神社が、未来に向かって新たな歴史を刻もうとしています。

In September 1991, Typhoon No.19 hit Japan
and seriously damaged the main
pavilion of
Itsukushima Shrine, a designated
National
Treasure, and such Important
Cultural Properties
as the Noh stage, Otorii, and
Five-storied
Pagoda.
Masuoka-Gumi, which had previously
handled
the construction of Itsukushima
Shrine’s
Shrine Office and the re-roofing
of Houkoku
Shrine, was entrusted with the
projects and
under the supervision of the
Agency for Cultural
Affairs, Itsukushima Shrine and
Hiroshima
Prefecture, we began the restoration
work
immediately after the disaster.
When reconstructing a National
Treasure or
Important Cultural Property,
the work must
be proceeded with complete loyalty
to historical
architectural methods. One of
our major goals
was therefore to harmonize traditional
techniques
with present-day technology.
With such dedication,
the Purification Hall of Itsukushima
Shrine,
East and West Corridor, Level
Stage and Raised
Stage were completely restored
and ready
to receive visitors by November
1991. The
restoration work then continued
onto Guest
Shrine Purification Hall, the
main Hall of
Left and Right Guard Shrine,
Left and Right
Musician Areas, Shrine Maiden
Bridges, Long
Bridge, Water Fetching Bridge,
Five-Storied
Pagoda, and the Otorii. In March
1994, work
on the Noh stage was completed
so that it
had regained its pristine shape.
Masuoka-Gumi has done its best
to restore
Itsukushima Shrine so that it
can continue
to add new pages to its 1,400-year
history.
